Elon Musk's Starlink has gained access to India through partnerships with telecom giants Reliance Jio and Airtel, aiming to expand internet services in a market with significant connectivity gaps. Starlink is set to face a spectrum tax in India, which could raise service costs as it will be required to pay around 3% of its adjusted gross revenue in addition to an 8% license fee. This tax applies to satellite operators receiving administratively assigned spectrum, as determined by the new Telecom Law. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is finalizing recommendations on satellite spectrum allocation, which will be reviewed by the Department of Telecom and the Digital Communications Commission before Cabinet approval.
Sunil Mittal, chairman of Bharti Group, emphasized the need for telecom operators to collaborate with satellite communication providers to enhance connectivity in rural areas. Speaking at MWC 2025, he urged global governments to incentivize telcos and allocate satcom spectrum on a shared basis for underserved regions, while advocating for a fair satcom policy that does not favor terrestrial providers in urban settings. Amidst ongoing discussions in India regarding satcom spectrum allocation, Mittal highlighted the industry's challenges, including low revenue growth and high spectrum costs.
Bharti Telecom, owned by billionaire Sunil Bharti Mittal, plans to raise approximately Rs 8,500 crore ($1.01 billion) in its largest-ever rupee bond issuance. This marks the company's first onshore debt sale of the year, following a successful Rs 80 billion raise in December 2023. The bonds, with maturities of three to ten years, are expected to offer a coupon rate of around 9%.
